Varicose vein treatment in Poole & Bournemouth

Expert, consultant-led care for varicose veins — close to home. Assessment, ultrasound scan and treatment with Mr Nick Lagattolla, Consultant Vascular Surgeon, all under one roof in Canford Cliffs.

Understanding the condition

What are varicose veins?

Varicose veins are enlarged, twisted veins — usually in the legs — that develop when the tiny one-way valves inside the vein stop working properly. Blood then pools instead of flowing back towards the heart, and the vein bulges and becomes visible at the surface. This underlying valve problem is called venous reflux, and it’s something we can measure precisely with an ultrasound scan.

They’re very common and often run in families. For some people they’re mainly a cosmetic concern; for others they cause real symptoms and, left untreated, can slowly worsen over time. The good news is that modern, minimally invasive treatment is quick, done under local anaesthetic, and highly effective.

When to seek assessment

Symptoms of varicose veins

Many people live with varicose veins for years before seeking help. You don’t need to wait until they’re severe — if any of the following sound familiar, a consultant assessment will tell you exactly what’s going on.

Aching & heaviness

Legs that ache, throb or feel heavy and tired — often worse after standing for long periods or by the end of the day.

Swelling & cramps

Swollen ankles, night cramps, or a restless, itchy feeling around the affected veins, particularly in warm weather.

Visible bulging veins

Rope-like, blue or purple veins that bulge above the skin — the most recognisable sign, and often the reason people seek treatment.

Skin changes

Dry, discoloured or hardened skin around the ankle. These are signs the condition may be more advanced and worth assessing promptly.

Thread & spider veins

Fine red or purple surface veins can sometimes point to a larger vein problem underneath — which is why a scan matters.

Symptoms worsening

If your veins are becoming more prominent or uncomfortable over time, early treatment is simpler and helps prevent complications.

How it works

Your vein assessment & treatment journey

Every treatment begins with a proper diagnosis. A duplex ultrasound scan maps the veins beneath the surface and shows exactly which valves are leaking — so your treatment is precise and evidence-based.

Treatment options

All NICE-recommended treatments, under one roof

National guidance (NICE) recommends minimally invasive endothermal treatments — such as radiofrequency ablation and laser ablation — as first-line care for most varicose veins. Because we offer the full range — including single-puncture VenaSeal bio-adhesive closure, ultrasound-guided foam sclerotherapy and liquid sclerotherapy — your treatment is chosen to fit your veins, not the other way round. With our endothermal treatments (RFA and EVLA), any phlebectomies needed to remove bulging surface veins are included in the price, not charged on top.

First-line · Endothermal

Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA)

A thin catheter uses radiofrequency energy to gently seal the faulty vein from the inside. Performed under local anaesthetic, RFA is comfortable, highly effective and often causes less bruising than laser — with a fast recovery. Any necessary phlebectomies to remove bulging surface veins are included in the price.

First-line · Endothermal

Endovenous Laser Ablation (EVLA)

A laser fibre delivers targeted energy to close the affected vein. A gold-standard, minimally invasive treatment done under local anaesthetic, EVLA has excellent long-term success rates and a quick return to normal life. Any necessary phlebectomies to remove bulging surface veins are included in the price.

From £2,795 one leg
Injection therapy

Ultrasound-Guided Foam Sclerotherapy (UGFS)

A specially prepared foam is injected under ultrasound guidance to close smaller or residual varicose veins. Ultrasound guidance makes the treatment more precise and accurate. A quick, needle-based treatment with no incisions — often used alongside ablation to give the best cosmetic result.

From £1,395 one leg
Injection therapy

Liquid Sclerotherapy

A fine injection of a liquid sclerosant is used to treat smaller surface veins and thread veins, causing them to fade over time. A simple, well-established treatment, often used to refine the final cosmetic result.

Single-puncture · Bio-adhesive

VenaSeal™ (Endoluminal Bio-Adhesive Closure)

A single-puncture technique that seals the faulty vein using a specially developed medical bio-adhesive — no heat and no tumescent local anaesthetic along the leg. That means minimal discomfort, little or no bruising, and often no need for compression stockings afterwards.

Surface vein removal

Ambulatory Phlebectomy

Prominent, bulging surface veins are removed through tiny 1–2mm incisions that need no stitches, under local anaesthetic. Frequently combined with RFA or EVLA to treat both the source and the visible veins in one plan.

From £2,695 one leg
Complete care, no surprises

Common questions

Varicose vein treatment FAQs

For many people varicose veins are uncomfortable rather than dangerous. However, if left untreated they can sometimes progress and lead to complications such as skin changes, inflammation (phlebitis), bleeding, or in some cases leg ulcers. If your veins are causing symptoms or getting worse, it’s sensible to have them assessed. A consultant assessment and ultrasound scan will tell you exactly what’s happening and whether treatment is advisable.

The NHS does treat varicose veins, but access is restricted by strict eligibility criteria and waiting lists can be long. Many people choose private treatment for a faster, more convenient route with a named consultant and a treatment date that suits them. At Haven Medical you don’t need a GP referral for self-pay treatment — you can book an assessment directly.

No. For self-pay (private) treatment you can book your consultation and duplex scan with us directly, without a GP referral. If you have private medical insurance, your insurer may require a referral — it’s worth checking with them first.

There’s no single “best” treatment — the right choice depends on the size, position and pattern of your veins, which is why the ultrasound scan matters. NICE guidance recommends endothermal treatments (radiofrequency ablation or endovenous laser ablation) as first-line for most varicose veins, with ultrasound-guided foam sclerotherapy often used for smaller or residual veins. We also offer single-puncture VenaSeal bio-adhesive closure and liquid sclerotherapy. Because Mr Lagattolla offers all of these, your treatment is tailored to give you the best result, rather than limited to one technique. With RFA and EVLA, any phlebectomies needed to remove bulging surface veins are included in the price rather than charged separately.

Modern endovenous treatments are carried out under local anaesthetic and are generally very well tolerated. Recovery is usually quick. Most people return to normal daily activities within a day or two, and many go back to work the next day. You’ll wear compression stockings for a short period afterwards and we’ll advise you to keep active and avoid strenuous exercise for a week or two. Once a faulty vein has been properly closed, it very rarely reopens. However, no treatment can stop entirely new veins from developing over time, as the underlying tendency remains. Accurate ultrasound mapping and treating the true source of the problem — as we do — gives the best chance of a lasting result. Occasional follow-up treatment of new veins is straightforward if ever needed.

No. Compression stockings can ease symptoms such as aching and swelling, but they don’t remove or cure varicose veins — they manage them. The only way to treat the underlying valve problem is with a procedure such as RFA, EVLA or foam sclerotherapy.

At Haven Medical, treatment starts from £1,395 for foam sclerotherapy and from £2,795–£2,995 for laser or radiofrequency ablation of one leg, all inclusive of consultation, scan, procedure, stockings and follow-up. Your initial assessment is £300, with £100 credited against your treatment if you proceed. You’ll be given a clear, fixed price after your assessment.
