ADHD assessment: £950

What is an ADHD assessment?

An ADHD assessment is a structured clinical assessment to understand whether a child or young person meets the criteria for ADHD. At Haven, the assessment includes a consultant psychiatrist interview, information from home and school, an objective attention assessment and a full written report with recommendations.

Signs of ADHD in children and young adults

The most common signs of ADHD in children and young people are:

Attention and concentration

Difficulty sustaining focus, being easily distracted, missing details and struggling to follow instructions through to completion.

Hyperactivity and restlessness

Constant fidgeting, difficulty sitting still or playing quietly and excessive talking, which often becomes inner restlessness in teenagers.

Impulsivity

Acting without thinking, blurting out answers, interrupting others and finding it hard to wait their turn.

Organisation & Time Management

Losing belongings, forgetting routines, missing deadlines and struggling to plan or start tasks, which becomes more noticeable as school demands increase.

Emotional Regulation

Low frustration tolerance, quick irritability and intense mood changes that seem out of proportion to the situation.

School & Social Functioning

Underachieving compared with ability and facing friendship difficulties, often because of interrupting, impulsivity or forgetfulness. May get into 'trouble' often.

ADHD assessment FAQs

No, you can book directly without referral. An initial consultation is available for families looking for detailed advice as to whether an autism, ADHD or dual assessment is best for their child.

No. It is a helpful first step for families that aren’t clear on which diagnostic route will be the most helpful and you will walk away with clear recommendations about next steps. You can book an initial consultation using the link here.

Haven Medical’s ADHD assessments are carried out face-to-face, with consultant psychiatrists (the most senior level of psychiatrists) who have expertise and training to diagnose ADHD. Our ADHD assessments follow NICE guidance and require evidence collected from both home and school environments using standardised questionnaires to inform the diagnosis. Whilst there is no national rule requiring a GP to accept a private ADHD assessment, our reports are thorough, detailed, evidence based and carried out by clinicians in the UK who are registered with the GMC.

Yes. If clinically appropriate we can start your child on a prescribing and titration package. This involves regular appointments and health screenings to monitor how the medications are working and adjust the dosage levels. It takes around 4 appointments to find a stable dose. You will be seen face to face or via phone consultation, every few weeks. Once stabilised, your child will need ongoing checks (on average 6 monthly or annual) in order for prescribing to continue.

For those assessed by Haven, the cost is £1,080 (for those assessed elsewhere a consultant psychiatrist will need to review your child’s report to make sure they are appropriate for medication). The cost includes regular appointments, appointment letters and prescriptions. The cost does not include the medication itself, which has to be paid for at the pharmacy. Prices fluctuate but can cost between £50 – £150 per month.

This is an arrangement with your NHS GP to take over the prescribing of medication. It means you don’t have to pay for the prescription or the medication itself. You can request shared care with your GP, once your child is stabilised on their ADHD medication, but they are not compelled to accept. They will likely require you to have regular (often twice a year) review appointments to continue prescribing. We can offer these at Haven.

We always advise families considering shared care to speak to their GP before embarking on the medication route so they are fully informed. We can complete shared care paperwork on your behalf, but we cannot guarantee the GP will accept the shared care arrangement.

We are able to see patients within a couple of weeks. Please call our team to confirm our most up to date availability.

We can assess children aged 6 and above and also offer adult assessment services for those over 18 years.
