My hand was in pain. I visited Haven Medical for a diagnosis Sam Fisher was great. A few weeks later I had surgery with Mr Southgate. Really quick and efficient service. Now I am back to work fully repaired. Glad I chose this practice. Thank you to all the staff including all the nurses and receptionists involved.

qFIT Bowel Cancer Screening Test

A simple home test posted anywhere in the UK — with doctor-reviewed results, virtual GP follow-up and direct NHS fast-track referral if needed.

The qFIT Bowel Cancer Screening Test Information

Ordering your qFIT test through Haven Medical is straightforward and entirely postal — no GP referral, no clinic visit required. We send your test kit to any UK address, you collect a small sample in the privacy of your own home, and return it to our accredited laboratory using the prepaid envelope provided. A Haven Medical GP then personally reviews your result and emails you a clear written summary — and if anything needs further attention, they’ll contact you directly and can refer you into the NHS fast-track pathway without delay.

What does the qFIT test entail?
  1. Order online: Book through Haven Medical — no GP referral needed. We post your test kit to any UK address.
  2. Take the test at home: A simple, discreet sample collection — takes just a few minutes in the privacy of your own home.
  3. Return your sample: Post your sample back to our accredited laboratory using the prepaid envelope included in your kit.
  4. Doctor reviews results: A Haven Medical GP reviews your result personally and prepares a clear written summary for you.
  5. Results & follow-up: Results emailed to you. If further action is needed, your GP contacts you directly and can refer immediately.
What does qFIT test detect?
  • Bowel cancer — the UK’s fourth most common cancer, with over 42,000 new cases diagnosed each year. Early detection dramatically improves outcomes.
  • Pre-cancerous polyps — small growths in the bowel that can develop into cancer over time. Detected early, they can be removed before they become cancerous.
  • Occult (hidden) blood — traces of blood invisible to the naked eye, which can be an early warning sign of bowel disease.
  • Other bowel conditions — the test can also flag other conditions causing bowel bleeding, such as inflammatory bowel disease or haemorrhoids.
Who should order a qFIT test?
  • Anyone aged 45 or over who wants peace of mind — particularly those who haven’t received an NHS screening kit
  • Anyone with a family history of bowel cancer or bowel polyps
  • Anyone experiencing changes in bowel habit, blood in stool, or unexplained abdominal pain
  • Anyone who wants earlier, more proactive screening than the NHS schedule currently offers
  • Patients who have previously had polyps removed and want regular monitoring
  • Anyone who simply wants a doctor to review and explain their result — not just a number in an app
What happens after your result?
  • Negative result: Your doctor reviews your result and emails you a clear written summary. No further action required at this time — we recommend annual screening.
  • Borderline or positive result: Your Haven Medical GP contacts you directly to discuss your result and recommend next steps. A virtual consultation can be arranged same day.
  • NHS fast-track referral: If your result is concerning, your doctor can refer you directly into the NHS two-week-wait pathway — the urgent route for suspected bowel cancer — without you needing to go back to your NHS GP first.
Why choose Haven Medical and not a high street testing kit
  1. A doctor reviews your result: Every result is personally reviewed by a Haven Medical GP — not processed by an algorithm and emailed as a number.
  2. Posted anywhere in the UK: You don’t need to come to Poole. We post your test kit to any address in the UK — you return your sample by post.
  3. Direct NHS fast-track access: if your result needs urgent investigation, your Haven Medical doctor can refer you into the NHS two-week-wait pathway immediately — without another GP appointment.
  4. Complete peace of mind: Whether your result is normal or not, you’ll have a doctor to speak to, a written summary, and a clear plan. No uncertainty. No waiting.

qFIT Bowel Cancer Screening Test FAQs

What exactly is the qFIT test?

It’s a simple home test that checks for tiny traces of blood in your stool, the kind you wouldn’t be able to see yourself. It measures a protein called haemoglobin, which is found in blood, and gives an exact reading rather than just a yes or no answer. It’s the same type of test used in the NHS Bowel Cancer Screening Programme

Can the qFIT test tell me if I have bowel cancer?

Not on its own, no. The qFIT test is a screening tool, it can flag that something may be worth looking into, but it can’t give you a diagnosis. If your result does come back positive, that doesn’t mean you have cancer. There are plenty of other reasons blood might show up in a stool sample, and our team will always talk you through what your result means.

What does a negative qFIT result mean?

It’s good news. A negative qFIT result means no blood was detected, and the likelihood of bowel cancer being present is very low – over 99%. That said, if you have symptoms that are bothering you, it’s always worth mentioning them to your doctor regardless of your result.

Who is the qFIT test for?

Anyone who wants to take a closer look at their bowel health, whether that’s because you have a family history of bowel cancer, you’re approaching an age where screening becomes more relevant, or you just want the peace of mind. If you’re already experiencing symptoms, we’d recommend speaking with one of our clinicians first so we can point you in the right direction.

Do I need to do anything to prepare?

Not really. There’s no fasting involved and you don’t need to change your diet or stop any medication. You’ll receive a simple kit with everything you need, and you can collect your sample at home at any time that suits you.
