Going through the assessment process for autism, ADHD or both is a significant moment for families, regardless of the outcome. Parents may feel relief and validation if a diagnosis is given – finally there is an explanation for the challenges their child may be experiencing. But the assessment is only the start of the process and many families are left wondering ‘What happens next?’
It can also be a challenging and emotional time for families when a child does not receive a diagnosis of autism or ADHD. Diagnostic criteria are very specific, and while they are important for ensuring accurate assessments, not meeting the full criteria does not mean that a child’s difficulties or experiences are any less real. Many children and young people may still face challenges with learning, emotions, attention, or social situations, even if these do not fit neatly within a diagnostic category. Recognising and supporting those needs is just as important.
At Haven Medical, we understand that diagnosis is just the beginning of the journey. Our post-diagnostic support service is designed to help children, young people and their families turn understanding into practical steps that improve everyday life at home, in school and beyond.
Why Is Post-Diagnostic Support Helpful?
A diagnosis provides valuable insight into how a child’s brain works, but it doesn’t provide the strategies needed to navigate daily challenges. Children with autism or ADHD may struggle with things such as emotional regulation, sensory sensitivities, social situations, learning differences, or managing routines and transitions.
Post-diagnostic support helps families:
- Understand the diagnosis in real-life terms – what it means for your child day-to-day
- Build on strengths while supporting areas of difficulty
- Develop practical strategies for home, school and social situations
- Support emotional wellbeing and confidence
- Work effectively with schools to ensure the right support is in place
For some children with ADHD, medication can be helpful. However, medication alone may not be enough. Learning strategies, building skills and creating supportive environments are key to helping children thrive.
Is Post-Diagnostic Support Right for Our Family?
Many parents tell us they leave the assessment process with new information but also many unanswered questions, such as:
- How do I explain the diagnosis to my child?
- What strategies will help at home?
- How can school better support my child?
- How can we reduce stress and overwhelm in daily life?
If these questions sound familiar, post-diagnostic support may be incredibly valuable for your family.
At Haven Medical, support is led by Jane McNiven, who has over 25 years of experience working with children and young people as a teacher, SENDCo and in child and adolescent mental health. Jane works closely with families, children and schools to develop practical, realistic strategies that make a genuine difference.
Her approach focuses on helping children feel understood, safe and confident in who they are, while empowering parents with the knowledge and tools they need.
What Does Post-Diagnostic Support Involve?
The journey begins with a First Steps Appointment — a 90-minute session where Jane reviews your child’s diagnostic report and talks through your family’s experiences, challenges and priorities.
During this session, you can explore:
- Your child’s specific strengths and difficulties
- Challenges at home or school
- Questions you or your child may have about the diagnosis
- What support would be most helpful moving forward
Following the appointment, you will receive a written summary and practical action plan, which may include:
- Skills sessions for your child (emotional regulation, communication or life skills)
- Parent coaching and strategy sessions
- Support working with your child’s school
- Signposting to helpful services and resources
Follow-up sessions can then focus on areas such as emotional regulation, managing social situations, coping with transitions, sensory challenges, or developing organisation and life skills for older children.
Supporting the Whole Team Around the Child
One of the most valuable aspects of post-diagnostic support is bringing home and school together. Jane can liaise directly with schools, helping staff understand your child’s needs, develop supportive strategies and, where necessary, assist with SEND support or the EHCP processes.
When families and schools work together with the right guidance, children are more likely to experience:
- Improved engagement with learning
- Greater confidence and self-esteem
- Better peer relationships
- Reduced anxiety and behavioural difficulties
Moving Forward with Confidence
A diagnosis of autism or ADHD is not about limitations — it is about understanding how your child experiences the world. With the right support, children can build resilience, develop important life skills and grow in confidence.
Post-diagnostic support at Haven Medical helps families move from uncertainty to clarity, providing practical guidance, compassionate support and a clear plan for the future — so every child has the opportunity to reach their full potential.
Appointments with Jane McNiven are often available within a week or so.
