Liver Conditions

Focusing on accurate diagnosis and early stage treatment, Haven Medical has consultant gastroenterologists who specialise in liver conditions such as liver disease, hepatitis and bile duct conditions.

Liver Disease Conditions, Diagnosis and Treatment

Our private gastroenterologists deliver expert, individualised care for a broad range of liver conditions, including fatty liver disease, hepatitis, cirrhosis, and metabolic liver disorders. Using advanced diagnostic approaches such as comprehensive liver function testing, ultrasound imaging, and liver biopsy where indicated, we focus on accurately identifying the underlying cause and assessing the extent of any liver involvement. This precise, evidence-led approach enables our consultants to develop clear, targeted management plans tailored to your needs, supporting liver health and long-term wellbeing.

Liver diseases we can diagnose and treat

The liver is one of the bodies largest organs. It processes nutrients from food, removes toxins, produces bile to aid digestion, stores energy, and supports blood clotting and immune function. The most common liver diseases are: – Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, Hepatitis B and C, Cirrhosis and autoimmune liver disease.

How are liver diseases diagnosed?

Liver diseases are diagnosed through a combination of medical history, physical examination, blood tests, imaging, and sometimes liver biopsy. Doctors often start with liver function tests, which measure enzymes, proteins, and bilirubin levels to detect liver damage or impaired function. Imaging techniques such as ultrasound, CT, or MRI help visualize liver size, structure, and fatty changes. Further specialised tests, such as a biopsy or FibroScan may be required (we are arrange for these at one of our partner sites).

What are the symptoms of liver disease?

Liver disease can present with a wide range of symptoms, which often develop gradually. Common signs include fatigue, weakness, and loss of appetite, as well as nausea, vomiting, and unexplained weight loss. Digestive issues such as abdominal pain, bloating, or swelling may occur, particularly in the upper right abdomen. Skin and eye changes, like jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes), and itchy skin or rashes can also appear. Other indicators include dark urine, pale stools, easy bruising, and bleeding. Mood changes, confusion, and fluid retention in the legs or abdomen can signal more advanced liver disease.

Treatment options for liver disease

Treatment for liver disease depends on the underlying cause, severity, and stage of the condition. Lifestyle changes are often the first step, including reducing alcohol intake, maintaining a healthy weight, exercising, and following a balanced diet. Medications may be prescribed to manage viral hepatitis, autoimmune liver disease, or complications such as fluid retention and high cholesterol. In cases of advanced liver damage or cirrhosis, procedures like endoscopic treatment for varices or liver transplantation may be necessary. Early detection and ongoing monitoring are essential, as timely intervention can slow disease progression, reduce symptoms, and improve long-term outcomes.

Liver Disease FAQs

What does the liver do?

The liver is a vital organ that performs many essential functions to keep the body healthy. It processes nutrients from food, converting them into energy and storing vitamins and minerals. The liver detoxifies harmful substances, including alcohol and medications, and helps remove waste from the bloodstream. It produces bile, which is essential for digesting fats and absorbing nutrients. The liver also regulates blood sugar, manages cholesterol levels, and makes important proteins for blood clotting and immune function. Overall, the liver plays a central role in metabolism, digestion, and maintaining the body’s chemical balance.

What are the early signs of liver disease?

Early signs of liver disease can be subtle, making timely detection crucial. Common warning signs include fatigue, weakness, and unexplained weight loss, as well as loss of appetite, nausea, and digestive discomfort. Skin and eye changes, such as jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes), itchy skin, or rashes, are also key indicators. Other symptoms may include dark urine, pale stools, abdominal bloating or swelling, and easy bruising or bleeding. Recognising these early liver disease symptoms can help prompt medical evaluation, allowing for effective treatment, lifestyle management, and prevention of serious complications like cirrhosis or liver failure.

When should I see a doctor about liver symptoms?

You should see a doctor about liver symptoms if you notice persistent fatigue, unexplained weight loss, or loss of appetite, as these may indicate early liver disease. Other warning signs include abdominal pain or swelling, jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes), dark urine, pale stools, or itchy skin. Easy bruising, bleeding, or unexplained nausea and vomiting can also signal liver problems. Early consultation with a healthcare professional allows for diagnosis through liver function tests, imaging, and specialist evaluation, enabling timely treatment, lifestyle advice, and prevention of complications such as cirrhosis or liver failure.
