Allergies are increasingly common in the UK; 1 in 3 people have some form of allergy, and an estimated 5% of the UK population have an allergy so severe it would require medical treatment (such as an ‘epipen’).  In the last 20 years, the number of hospital admissions for severe allergic reactions has doubled, perhaps as a result of greater exposure to foods once rare in the UK (for example, kiwi or sesame), perhaps due to better reporting, or maybe due to allergies being more common – the causes aren’t clear.

From persistent (and often debilitating) hay fever and skin reactions to unexplained gastrointestinal discomfort, identifying the precise cause of an allergic reaction can be frustrating, and in some cases vital, if serious allergies go unrecognised.  As almost 50% of people with allergies will have more than one, a comprehensive allergy test can give valuable insight.

In recent years, advances in molecular diagnostics have transformed allergy testing, and one of the most comprehensive tools now available is the ALEX³ (Allergy Explorer) test, which tests for over 300 allergens, through one simple blood test.

Read on what the ALEX³ allergy test is, why you might consider having one, the benefits it offers, and how it differs from its predecessor, the ALEX² test.

What is the ALEX³ Allergy Test?

Immunoglobulin E) is the antibody responsible for triggering allergic reactions in the body.

Unlike traditional allergy testing methods, such as skin prick tests where a small amount of the allergen is placed on the skin and can only be used for a limited number of allergens—the ALEX³ test can analyse up to 300 allergens simultaneously from a single blood sample.

These allergens include:

  • Environmental triggers (pollens, moulds, dust mites)
  • Trees, grasses, weeds
  • Animal dander
  • Foods
    • Nuts
    • Dairy
    • Seafood
    • Fruit
    • Vegetables
    • Meat
    • Legumes
    • Cereals and grains
    • Coffee / cocoa
    • Spices
  • Insect venoms, parasites
  • Latex and other less common allergens

What makes ALEX³ particularly sophisticated is its use of molecular allergology, meaning it can identify not just the allergen source (e.g. peanut) but the specific protein component responsible for the reaction.  It can also tell you how allergic you are to something, vitally important if you are at risk of anaphylaxis.

Why Should You Consider Having an ALEX³ Test?

You might benefit from the ALEX3 test if you:

  • Experience chronic allergy symptoms (e.g. sneezing, itching, rashes, wheezing, blocked nose)
  • Suspect food allergies or intolerances
  • Have multiple or unclear triggers
  • Have not responded well to previous treatments
  • Want a comprehensive overview rather than testing allergens individually
  • Have a serious allergy and want to know if you have any other allergies

Because symptoms often overlap or mimic other conditions, identifying the exact trigger is critical for effective management.

What Makes the ALEX³ Different?

One Test – Many Answers

The ALEX³ test provides one of the broadest allergy panels available, assessing around 300 allergens in a single blood sample.  This allows you to pick up allergies you may be completely unaware of.

Molecular-Level Precision

Traditional tests often identify only the allergen source (e.g. “peanut allergy”), whereas ALEX³ can pinpoint specific allergenic proteins within that source.  This is important because some proteins cause mild reactions and others are linked to severe or ‘whole body’ reactions. With greater precision of results comes advice tailored to you.

Identification of Cross-Reactivity

Many allergic reactions are caused by cross-reactivity, where proteins in different substances are structurally similar. For example: Birch pollen allergy may cross-react with certain fruits.

ALEX³ can distinguish between true allergies and cross-reactive responses, helping avoid unnecessary dietary restrictions.

Increased Diagnostic Accuracy

The test is designed with high specificity, meaning it reduces the likelihood of false positives and provides a more reliable diagnosis. This is particularly valuable for individuals with complex or multiple sensitivities.

Targeted Treatment Planning

With detailed IgE profiles, healthcare professionals can develop individualised management strategies, including:

  • Targeted avoidance plans
  • Allergen immunotherapy
  • Medication adjustments

Safer to Administer

A lot of people with allergies will have a skin prick test, where a small amount of the allergy is placed on the skin.  Any welts, swelling or redness indicates that a reaction has taken place. Whilst a common starting point, skin prick tests are less accurate than the ALEX3, cannot give an indication of how allergic someone is and can even pose a risk to a severe reaction.

The Difference Between ALEX² and ALEX³

The ALEX³ test is an evolution of the earlier ALEX² platform, developed using large-scale clinical data and research insights.  The ALEX3 tests covers more allergens and more molecular allergens, providing broader and more detailed coverage.

The Difference the ALEX³ Test Can Make To Your Life

For many people, living with undiagnosed or poorly understood allergies can be exhausting (poor sleep, constantly itching, sneezing or having stomach issues) but can also be life threatening. For instance, for young adults about to embark on life away from home, the not-knowing of the severity of your allergies can put a halt to travel plans, the ability to share a communal kitchen space and to even live independently.

“We knew Kitty was allergic to peanuts (she had had the skin prick test as a child) and we were told she was ‘moderate to severe’ but we had no way of knowing how allergic she was.  She wanted to travel to South East Asia for 4 months, which obviously posed some significant risks.  Following the ALEX3, we got a clear report, showing colour coded results as to how severe her sensitivity was.  Using this information, plus an appointment with a GP at Haven to talk through how to manage a reaction if one happened and some practical advice (that proved invaluable), Kitty was able to really enjoy her time away, armed with a great deal more information.  One of the best things we have done as it also picked up some unknown allergies that explain why she suffered with ongoing red eyes and itching.”

The ALEX³ Test Provides:

Clarity

Instead of guessing or avoiding large groups of foods or environments, you gain evidence-based answers about your triggers.

Confidence

Knowing exactly what causes your symptoms allows you to make informed decisions about:

  • Diet
  • Travel
  • Lifestyle

Better Health Outcomes

With accurate diagnosis comes better treatment, reducing:

  • Flare-ups
  • Emergency reactions
  • Long-term complications

Reduced Anxiety

Uncertainty about allergies often leads to over-restriction or fear of reactions.  It can hold you back from travel plans or even living away from home or eating out.  A clear diagnosis helps you regain control.

Important Considerations

While ALEX³ is highly advanced, it is important to understand that:

  • It detects sensitisation, not always clinical allergy
  • Results should be interpreted alongside medical history and symptoms
  • A qualified healthcare professional should guide diagnosis and management

No single test can replace clinical judgement, but ALEX³ significantly enhances it.

The ALEX³ Test at Haven Medical

Haven Medical offers the ALEX3 test to all age ranges. If you, or your child is worried about needles, we can use a highly effective numbing cream that means the injection is virtually undetectable.  Results are available within a week or so.  Following your results, you may wish to talk to one of our Doctors about how best to manage any allergies you may have and treatment plans.

Appointments are available same or next day. Please call 01202 110303 to book. Read more about diagnostic tests at Haven Medical here.
