sebaceous Cyst and Other Skin Cyst Removal

Private sebaceous and skin cyst removal at Haven Medical in Canford Cliffs. Our Consultant Dermatologists provide expert, personalised assessment and removal of skin cysts, including sebaceous cysts, epidermoid cysts and pilar cysts. Whether you have a cyst you would like removed, a lump beneath the skin you want investigated, or a growth that has been bothering you, our team is here to help. Using precise surgical techniques, we focus on safe, effective removal with minimal scarring and clear aftercare tailored to you.

Sebaceous Cyst Removal

A sebaceous cyst is a common, benign lump that forms beneath the skin. They develop when a sebaceous gland or hair follicle becomes blocked, causing keratin and other material to build up and form a slow-growing, enclosed sac beneath the skin surface.

Sebaceous cysts are typically round, smooth and movable, and are most commonly found on the face, neck, scalp, back and chest. They are usually painless, though they can become tender, swollen or infected, in which case prompt assessment is recommended.

Most sebaceous cysts are harmless and many people choose to leave them alone. However, removal is a straightforward option if your cyst is growing, has become infected, is causing discomfort, or you simply wish to have it removed.

At Haven Medical, our Consultant Dermatologists carry out sebaceous cyst removal as a quick outpatient procedure under local anaesthetic. A small incision is made to remove the cyst and its surrounding sac, which helps to reduce the chance of it returning. You will be able to go home the same day, and most patients recover quickly and comfortably.

If you have a cyst you would like assessed or removed, our team at our Canford Cliffs clinic is here to help. Appointments are available to book today.

Dermoid Cyst Removal

A dermoid cyst is a benign growth that forms when skin tissue becomes trapped beneath the skin’s surface during development. Unlike other types of cyst, dermoid cysts can contain a variety of tissue including hair, skin and occasionally other structures, which is what makes them distinct from more common skin cysts.

Dermoid cysts are typically present from birth, though they often go unnoticed for many years before becoming apparent. They are most commonly found around the eyebrow and outer edge of the eye socket, though they can also appear on the neck, scalp and other areas of the body. They tend to feel firm and smooth, are fixed in position rather than movable, and are generally painless unless they become inflamed or infected.
While dermoid cysts are harmless, removal is recommended if the cyst is growing, causing discomfort, becoming inflamed, or if you would prefer to have it removed for cosmetic reasons.

At Haven Medical, our Consultant Dermatologists provide expert assessment and removal of dermoid cysts as an outpatient procedure under local anaesthetic. The cyst is carefully excised in its entirety to reduce the likelihood of recurrence, and our team takes care to minimise scarring and ensure a smooth recovery.

If you have a growth you would like assessed or a dermoid cyst you would like removed, our team at our Canford Cliffs clinic is here to help. Appointments are available to book today.

Milia Removal

Milia are tiny white or yellowish spots that form just beneath the surface of the skin. They are extremely common and completely harmless, but are often a source of confusion as they are frequently mistaken for whiteheads, acne or other skin conditions.

Unlike a spot or whitehead, milia cannot be squeezed or popped. They form when keratin, a natural protein found in skin, becomes trapped just beneath the skin’s surface and forms a small, hard cyst. They do not have an opening onto the skin surface, which is why attempting to squeeze them rarely works and can cause irritation or scarring.

Milia most commonly appear around the eyes, nose and cheeks, though they can develop anywhere on the face or body. They can affect people of all ages, including newborns, and can be triggered by sun damage, heavy skincare products, skin resurfacing treatments or simply occur without any obvious cause.

Many milia will clear on their own over time, but this can take months and is not guaranteed. For milia that are persistent, widespread or simply bothersome, professional removal is a quick and effective solution.

At Haven Medical, milia removal is carried out by our Consultant Dermatologists using a precise technique to safely extract each milium individually. This is a more thorough and reliable approach than treatments offered by beauty salons, with the added reassurance of having a medical professional assess your skin at the same time. The procedure is straightforward, causes minimal discomfort and you will be able to go home the same day.

If you have milia you would like removed or are unsure whether what you have are milia, our team at our Canford Cliffs clinic is here to help. Appointments are available to book today.

Pilar Cyst Removal

A pilar cyst is a benign growth that forms from the tissue surrounding a hair follicle. They develop when keratin, a natural protein found in hair and skin, builds up within the follicle and forms a smooth, enclosed sac beneath the skin surface.

Pilar cysts are most commonly found on the scalp, where the majority of hair follicles are located, though they can occasionally appear elsewhere on the body. They tend to feel firm and smooth, are usually movable when pressed, and are generally painless unless they become inflamed or infected. They can vary in size and may grow slowly over time. In some cases multiple pilar cysts can develop at once, and they can run in families.
While pilar cysts are harmless, removal is recommended if the cyst is growing, has become infected or inflamed, is causing discomfort, or if you would prefer to have it removed for cosmetic reasons.

At Haven Medical, our Consultant Dermatologists provide expert assessment and removal of pilar cysts as an outpatient procedure under local anaesthetic. The cyst is carefully excised in its entirety to reduce the likelihood of recurrence, and our team takes care to minimise scarring and ensure a smooth recovery.
If you have a growth on your scalp or elsewhere that you would like assessed or a pilar cyst you would like removed, our team at our Canford Cliffs clinic is here to help. Appointments are available to book today.

Inclusion Cyst Removal

An inclusion cyst is a benign growth that forms when skin cells become trapped beneath the surface of the skin, typically as a result of injury, trauma or a surgical procedure. Rather than shedding normally, the trapped skin cells multiply and form a smooth, enclosed sac filled with keratin beneath the skin surface.

Inclusion cysts can develop anywhere on the body and are particularly common in areas that have been subject to prior injury, scarring or repeated friction. They tend to feel firm and smooth, are usually movable when pressed, and are generally painless unless they become inflamed or infected. They can vary in size and may grow slowly over time if left untreated.

While inclusion cysts are harmless, removal is recommended if the cyst is growing, has become infected or inflamed, is causing discomfort, or if you would prefer to have it removed for cosmetic reasons.

At Haven Medical, our Consultant Dermatologists provide expert assessment and removal of inclusion cysts as an outpatient procedure under local anaesthetic. The cyst is carefully excised in its entirety to reduce the likelihood of recurrence, and our team takes care to minimise scarring and ensure a smooth recovery.

If you have a growth you would like assessed or an inclusion cyst you would like removed, our team at our Canford Cliffs clinic is here to help. Appointments are available to book today.

Cycst FAQs

What is a sebaceous cyst?

A sebaceous cyst is a common, benign lump that forms beneath the skin when a sebaceous gland or hair follicle becomes blocked. This causes keratin and other material to build up and form a slow-growing, enclosed sac beneath the skin surface. They are entirely harmless in the vast majority of cases, though they can occasionally become infected or inflamed.

Despite being the most widely used term, sebaceous cyst is something of a misnomer. Most cysts of this type are technically epidermoid or pilar cysts, but sebaceous cyst remains the term most people are familiar with and is widely used by patients and clinicians alike.

What causes a sebaceous cyst?

Sebaceous cysts form when a sebaceous gland or hair follicle becomes blocked, preventing the normal flow of keratin and sebum. This blockage can occur as a result of damage to the skin, inflammation around a hair follicle, or simply without any obvious cause. They are more common in adults and tend to run in families. Sun damage, acne and minor skin injuries can also increase the likelihood of cysts developing.

What does a sebaceous cyst look like?

Sebaceous cysts are typically round, smooth and dome-shaped, sitting just beneath the surface of the skin. They are usually skin-coloured or slightly yellowish, and may have a small dark central point known as a punctum. They are most commonly found on the face, neck, scalp, back and chest, and tend to feel soft or firm depending on their size and contents. They move easily when pressed and are generally painless unless infected.

Can you get a mole removed on the NHS?

The NHS will only remove moles that are clinically necessary to remove, such as those suspected of being cancerous. Moles removed for cosmetic reasons or patient reassurance are not routinely funded, making private treatment the most practical option for most people.

How is a sebaceous cyst treated?

Small cysts that are not causing any problems can often be left alone and monitored over time. If a cyst becomes infected, a short course of antibiotics may be recommended. Surgical removal is the most effective long-term treatment and involves removing the cyst and its surrounding sac under local anaesthetic. Draining a cyst without removing the sac is not recommended as it is likely to return.

Can I remove a sebaceous cyst at home?

Attempting to remove or drain a cyst at home is not recommended. Squeezing or puncturing a cyst can introduce bacteria, leading to infection, and is unlikely to result in permanent removal as the sac beneath the skin will remain intact. Home removal kits carry a risk of scarring and complications. Professional removal by a Consultant Dermatologist is the safest and most effective option.

Can you pop a sebaceous cyst?

Technically a cyst can be popped, but doing so is strongly inadvisable. Popping a cyst does not remove the sac beneath the skin, meaning it is very likely to refill and return. It also carries a significant risk of introducing infection, causing inflammation and leading to scarring. If your cyst is bothering you, professional removal is a far safer and more permanent solution.

How long do sebaceous cysts last?

Sebaceous cysts do not usually resolve on their own. Without treatment, most cysts will remain stable or grow slowly over time. Some may occasionally become infected or inflamed, which can cause temporary changes in size and appearance. Surgical removal is the only reliable way to permanently remove a cyst and prevent it from returning.

Will a sebaceous cyst come back after removal?

When a cyst is fully removed including its surrounding sac, the chance of recurrence is low. If only the contents of the cyst are drained without removing the sac, it is very likely to return. At Haven Medical, our Consultant Dermatologists take care to excise the cyst in its entirety to minimise the likelihood of recurrence.

Is cyst removal available on the NHS?

NHS funding for cyst removal is limited and is generally only available where the cyst is causing significant medical problems. Cosmetic removal is not routinely funded, and waiting times for those who do qualify can be considerable. Private treatment at Haven Medical offers fast access to a Consultant Dermatologist, with appointments typically available within days.

How much does cyst removal cost?

The cost of cyst removal at Haven Medical will depend on the size and location of the cyst. Pricing is confirmed following your initial consultation. Please contact us or book an appointment at our Canford Cliffs clinic to find out more.
