Skin Lesions FAQs

What is a skin lesion?

A skin lesion is any abnormal area of skin – this includes a wide range of growths and changes such as moles, cysts, skin tags, warts, lipomas, and rough or discoloured patches.

What causes skin lesions?

Causes vary widely depending on the type. Some are genetic, some are caused by sun damage (such as actinic keratoses and age spots), some are viral (warts), and others simply develop with age. Many are entirely benign, though some require assessment to rule out anything more serious

What does a skin lesion check involve?

Your consultant dermatologist will carry out a thorough visual assessment of the lesion, typically using dermoscopy, a specialist magnifying tool, to examine it in detail. If further investigation is needed, a biopsy may be recommended.

Can skin lesions be removed?

Yes. Most benign lesions can be removed through a straightforward procedure such as surgical excision, cryotherapy, or laser treatment depending on the type and location.

Will the NHS remove my skin lesion?

The NHS will only treat lesions that are clinically necessary to remove. Benign lesions or those removed for cosmetic reasons are not routinely funded, making private treatment the most accessible option.

How much does skin lesion removal cost?

Costs vary depending on the type, size, and location of the lesion and the removal method required. All fees are discussed and agreed with you before any procedure takes place.
